NEET UG 2024 Result OMR Controversy: ‘OMR torn intentionally,’ UP candidate alleges mishandling of OMR sheet

Ayushi Patel’s Case: After the NEET results were announced, Ayushi Patel from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, faced a problem. She received an email from the National Testing Agency (NTA) saying that her result couldn’t be generated because her Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet was torn and damaged.

Ayushi believed she should have scored 715 marks. When she tried to check her results online, she saw an error message saying, “your result has not been generated.” She initially thought it was a website issue since many students were trying to check their results at the same time.

One hour after the results were out, Ayushi got an email from the NTA explaining that her result couldn’t be generated due to the damaged OMR sheet. She quickly replied to the NTA, asking for a photocopy of her OMR sheet. The NTA sent her a copy within 24 hours.

When Ayushi checked the OMR sheet, she claimed the barcode looked deliberately torn, but all her answers were clearly marked. She calculated her score manually using the final answer key and believed she scored 715 marks.

Ayushi has now taken legal action and filed a petition with the Allahabad High Court. The hearing is scheduled for today, Tuesday, June 11.

The NTA responded to a viral video about Ayushi’s case, stating that the damaged OMR sheet wasn’t sent through an official NTA email. They emphasized that the OMR sheets and recorded scores are accurate and urged students to get their scores only from the official website, exams.nta.ac.in/NEET.

In a press briefing on June 8, the NTA’s Director-General mentioned that a committee decided to give grace marks to candidates affected by time constraints due to errors in question papers and damaged OMR sheets. A special four-member committee is investigating the issue and will report within a week. A final decision, possibly including a re-examination, will be made based on this report.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Sanjay Singh have criticized the government’s handling of the NEET exam situation. Rahul Gandhi has promised to raise student concerns in the legislature and shared Ayushi’s video online, questioning the system.
